Robbins Street Conservation Area

How can Avon Enjoy this pristine landmark?

On a recent Sunday, I had the chance to walk into the Robbins Street Conservation Area. The Town acquired this conservation land in 1977 and it is deeded through Avon’s Conservation Commission.  Have you ever walked in this Area?  Some residents say they walked through this land to get to the old Crowley School, back in the day.

The Town is considering requesting grant funding to establish trails on this land.  As it stands now, access to the Area is somewhat difficult, requiring boots and the ability to get over various fallen trees.  There are two ways to enter it – from Robbins Street or from Fagan Drive.  It is 16.7 acres between these two streets.  From Fagan Drive, it is only a little bit accessible, perhaps a few hundred feet into the property before one reaches lots of thorns and wet areas where it’s currently very difficult to pass.  From Robbins Street, the Conservation Area has 45 feet of frontage between the homes at 45 Robbins Street and 57 Robbins Street.  Entering from this side is a bit easier.  The land is initially drier and higher.  There are some fallen trees to cross over but there are also many tall, mature trees.  As one walks further in, one can see a line of ledge where the property starts to gradually go downhill.  Eventually, one encounters some wet areas on the East Main Street side of the Conservation Area.  Overall, the land has a gradual, rolling feel.  From Robbins, the land gradually slopes downward toward Fagan Drive.  It looks like this Conservation Area would be a nice, quiet wooded area for perhaps one mile of walking trails in the Town, affording a pleasant outdoor walk and some time in nature.

Although you can see the borders in the winter, this area probably has a rich canopy of leaves in the green months, mixing some pine and deciduous trees. Adjacent to this wooded area are the Town Police Station and a couple of baseball fields. Parents could leisurely enjoy a walk during baseball practice. Or you could take a stroll after visiting the nearby Town Offices.  If you have comments on this idea, please contact the Town Planner, Rick Jordan, at rjordan@avon-ma.gov .

Thank you to Avon resident, Malik Sabree, for providing the drone footage as a gift to the Town. Click here to view video footage.
